What You Need to Know After 12 years and three record attempts, Joe “Stringbean” McConaughy broke the supported record on the John Muir Trail—arguably the most competitive Fastest Known Time (FKT) in the world. He finished the 223-mile route through California’s Sierra Nevada in two days, 16 hours, and 15 seconds to shave nearly three and a half hours off of François D’Haene’s nine-year-old record. McConaughy attributes his 12 years of experience on the route along with a stellar crew willing to tackle complicated logistics and pace up to 40-mile sections to his success. He and one of his pacers, Caroline Himbert (who set her own FKT on the JMT this summer), spoke with author Emily Halnon for this story.

I am going to go put down an effort on this tomorrow morning! I suppose you would be hard pressed to find a more notably scenic trail run in the world, even if part of it is bike pathway. Just wish I was still in road runner shape.

It is true. I have not submitted some of the things around my home state just because they aren’t quite notable enough on a regional, national, or international scale.  This being said, there are one or two on my list that are renowned classics in… read more »

I plan to make a northbound attempt on this route starting Monday, July 8, 2019.   This will be a solo, self-supported attempt.   I will start at the Oregon border on the Bridge of the Gods and follow the PCT to it's northern terminus (Monument 78… read more »
