The first parts of the Cockaponset Trail were built in 1934 as a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) project. The fruits of CCC labors can be seen on the northern parts of the trail. Look for excellent grading and enduring rockwork. Also, east of the trail just north of Jericho Road, you can see the footings of the old CCC-constructed Turkey Hill Observation Tower. The trail also passes several defunct charcoal production sites.
The idea is to climb Devil's Rest, Mt Defiance, and Dog Mtn. Any route is allowed on these summits. Time from the first TH to the last, and includes driving between the THs. Otherwise, any route is allowed. It comes to about 26.6 miles with 10,000+' of elevation gain.
"Nellie" won almost everything she entered - 441 events with 390 podium finishes - until she almost died. Alone in the desert for 3 days and 2 nights in December, with a broken pelvis, lying unsheltered and unable to move Alone, except for her dog.

SALT is a 350ish mile circuit created by Matt Kirk using the Appalachian Trail, Bartram Trail, Chatooga River Trail, Foothills Trail, Palmetto Trail, Art Loeb Trail and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail along with a few connecting trails/ roads through Brevard. The loop is complete except for a short section from the Palmetto Trail to DuPont State Park. Land was recently acquired by DuPont to connect the circuit but is in the beginning stages of building the trail. Here is a write up from Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine:
