Description

Just east of Seattle, along the I-90 corridor, lies a mythic training ground for hikers, scramblers, mountaineers, and alpinists, lying within the recently established Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area. Peaks line the highway on either side, requiring grueling 4,000' climbs before providing incredible views of Mt Rainier (to the south) and the Central Cascades (to the north). In particular, the peaks north of the I-90 are often climbed, but none more than Mailbox Peak.

Dune Climb to beach and back (MI)

Description

The “Dune Climb” is the most famous feature of Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore (one of 4 Lakeshores in the NPS system), and is done tens of thousands of times every summer.  It’s a stunning dune of pure white sand going right out of the parking lot.  Most just do that, but if you keep going the angle eases up, you’re running through soft sand, until you top out, and suddenly, boom - the clear blue waters of Lake Michigan extend out past the horizon.  It's beautiful and can be done barefoot.
