On the Bay Area trail running scene, the South Bay and Peninsula are often unfairly overlooked. This route starts on slightly climbing single track through woods and chaparral, but for the final mile, it grinds you up the steepest section of fire road. You’ll enjoy sweeping vistas of the South Bay and up the peninsula to San Francisco (if you’re still lucid).
This Marin classic route’s tradition goes back several years and nicknamed "Ninja Loop" by the founders Larissa Rivers, Brett Rivers, Devon Yanko, and Nathan Yanko after Devon suggested it because the group was stealthy and secret (and partly an inside joke). This fast route hits many of the best trails in southern Marin (SCA, Coastal, Miwok and Marincello) and as you move around, you’ll have spectacular views south to the Golden Gate Bridge and city, west to the ocean, north to Mount Tamalpais, and east to the Tiburon peninsula.
Mount Diablo. A burly and beautiful beast of a mountain an hour east of San Francisco. With an apt name, Diablo tends to be toasty so bring plenty of water. There are water taps at Mitchell Canyon, and if you're lucky the store will be open at the top.
