Cook-Aug-Dog Traverse (WA)

Description

This point-to-point traverse combines the older lesson known trail of Cook Hill with one of the most popular hikes in the region in Dog Mountain. This traverse involves three summits. Cook Hill, Augspurger Mountain and Dog mountain. From Cook Hill one follows a old trail originally made by trail pioneer Russ Jolley. The seldom used trail is marked with Soup Can lids on trees. While this route is entirely on trail, one might feel that it can be more bushwacky at certain times in the year when overgrowth is at its peak.

Marston Trail Loop (Baxter State Park, ME)

Description

This route starts at a parking lot directly across from Doubletop Mountain. It uses the Marston, Mt. Coe and South Brother Trails. The path from the trailhead leads gently up and down through lowlands, crossing a sandy, shallow stream before bearing right. The footing is excellent, with mainly packed dirt and a smattering of roots and rocks. At the T intersection bear right, as the trail winds through hardwoods, eventually falling alongside a brook, which it crosses a few times. Fine water sources and waterfalls make the trail even prettier, as one starts to climb steadily.
