Needles Grand Tour (UT)

Submitted by Lapo Mori on Mon, 08/31/2020 - 09:14am
Description

Spectacular tour of some of the most interesting features of the Needles district of the Canyonlands National Park, starting from the Squaw Flat Trailhead parking area, keeping to the right at the first intersection to catch the connector trail that brings to the Druid Arch Trail. Continue all the way to the Druid Arch (very steep last section, involving a steel ladder) and then come back to the Druid Arch Trail until taking the Chesler Park Trail on the left and then the Devils Kitchen Trail on the right.

Description

Atlantic Peak (12,490') is the last major summit on the southern end of the Wind River Range before the mountains give way to the barren hills of South Pass. It is also the high point of the region south of Wind River Peak/Temple Peak, and offers great views north towards the aforementioned peaks, as well as the Atlantic Canyon cirque.

Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail (KS)

Description

The Switchgrass Mountain Bike trail is located at Wilson Lake.  These trails offer several different kind of challenges from technical rocky single track to roots running through the trees.  The views are amazing and include scenic views of the lake, red rock bluffs, and native grass prairie.  These are mountain bike trails but, are a trail runners paradise. There is enough climbing to make you forget you are in pancake flat Kansas.  These trails have been described as epic and are definitely well maintained.

Mount Russell (CA)

Description

Mount Russell is one of the California 14er's. The summit is 14,088' above sea level, but sitting just to the north of Mount Whitney, Mount Russell gets much less attention. There are multiple technical rock climbing routes to the summit, and one classic 3rd class ridge, that most climbers use for a descent, but actually makes for an awesome alpine scramble in its own rite. In my opinion this route embodies the ideals of an FKT to the fullest. It starts at a classic trail head, the Whitney Portal. It climbs a 14er, climbing over 5,800' in the process.
