What You Need to Know After 12 years and three record attempts, Joe “Stringbean” McConaughy broke the supported record on the John Muir Trail—arguably the most competitive Fastest Known Time (FKT) in the world. He finished the 223-mile route through California’s Sierra Nevada in two days, 16 hours, and 15 seconds to shave nearly three and a half hours off of François D’Haene’s nine-year-old record. McConaughy attributes his 12 years of experience on the route along with a stellar crew willing to tackle complicated logistics and pace up to 40-mile sections to his success. He and one of his pacers, Caroline Himbert (who set her own FKT on the JMT this summer), spoke with author Emily Halnon for this story.

I did an attempt May 21st/22nd 2020 but aborted after 115K/25h. It is rough terrain in some parts but I had a fantastic trip.

I will be attempting the Unsupported FKT from Ankeny to Woodward on Tuesday (6/16/2020). I will upload a Strava Beacon link prior and Strava result afterwards if I get the time.

Oh come on Kendall. This seems petty.  If this is the way things are played, then I would like to point out on several of your Strava cycling KOM, the data for your ride, which included the KOM segment, exceeded the posted speed limit and appears to… read more »

The unreported FKT for this route is likely held by Luke Hanson, set during the 2017 Gordano Round Marathon in a course record time of 3:32:54. https://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=119400
