The penitente is the steepest climb in Quito at 56% avg grade for about 420m horizonta, 240m+. This climb is often used as a training ground for trail runners in Quito and has also been part of a "down-up" race over the years. Many of the region's best runners have made a squeeze on this climb and the top-10 list is quite competitive.

FAR TO FAR

This is a popular route for mountain bikers and off-roading vehicles to go up to Palomar Mountain, but you can also run it! I parked where the AllTrails map took me, just where the road turns into gravel/dirt. I parked on the side of the road there and started a little after 9am. This route is about 8.5 miles uphill and then you turn around and go 8.5 miles downhill. I did not see anyone on my way up, but had some motorbikers and cars pass me on the way down. It was a long and tough climb up, I am glad I did not start super late, it would've gotten pretty hot.

If you like actually running, this is the longest of the Wasatch watershed traverses. Normally I'm not a fan of naming runs but this one is shaped like a uterus and I couldn't resist.

I tried this in 2024 starting up Grandeur and hurt my IT band around halfway. The 2nd half would have been all on trail and I wasn't really interested in walking on trail for 25 miles so I did some PT and did it the next year.

Big Cottonwood watershed traverse

The Big Cottonwood watershed traverse was the 2nd to last one that I did and is one of the more fun routes in the Wasatch, combining some of the best parts of the WURL and all the shenanigans on Wildcat Ridge. I believe someone did this the year before so it's by no means a first, plus it's the Wasatch so I assume that nothing is ever a first.
