What You Need to Know After 12 years and three record attempts, Joe “Stringbean” McConaughy broke the supported record on the John Muir Trail—arguably the most competitive Fastest Known Time (FKT) in the world. He finished the 223-mile route through California’s Sierra Nevada in two days, 16 hours, and 15 seconds to shave nearly three and a half hours off of François D’Haene’s nine-year-old record. McConaughy attributes his 12 years of experience on the route along with a stellar crew willing to tackle complicated logistics and pace up to 40-mile sections to his success. He and one of his pacers, Caroline Himbert (who set her own FKT on the JMT this summer), spoke with author Emily Halnon for this story.

Based on my understanding of the new permitting system this route from three creeks that crosses Tam McArthur trailhead will require a permit moving forward?  - https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/willamette/passes-permits/recreation/?ci…
  • Jonathan Byers:
Not to be too much of a buzzkill, but I just don't see how this qualifies as an FKT.  The guidelines specifically state "The route must be notable and distinct enough so that others will be interested in repeating it" - I just don't… read more »

Officially stating my intentions to complete an unsupported FKT of my home trail in early April, 2021. I've been training for the past year and will aim to come in under Matt Halfar's 4d and 5ms, following the Elizabeth to Grand Tower Route.  I'll… read more »
