What You Need to Know After 12 years and three record attempts, Joe “Stringbean” McConaughy broke the supported record on the John Muir Trail—arguably the most competitive Fastest Known Time (FKT) in the world. He finished the 223-mile route through California’s Sierra Nevada in two days, 16 hours, and 15 seconds to shave nearly three and a half hours off of François D’Haene’s nine-year-old record. McConaughy attributes his 12 years of experience on the route along with a stellar crew willing to tackle complicated logistics and pace up to 40-mile sections to his success. He and one of his pacers, Caroline Himbert (who set her own FKT on the JMT this summer), spoke with author Emily Halnon for this story.

  • Samuel Dickie:
Hi Richard, Im attempting the FKT at the beginning of May this year. I just wanted to know if I had to stay on the trail or if its okay if I use the road? Or will my attempt be no longer valid if I used any part of the road at all.

I’m trying to go after the self supported record starting in two days, in a potentially ill advised but nevertheless fun jaunt. Tracking here: https://us0-share.inreach.garmin.com/whereswillie also updates on my Instagram @wamoth.

I lost steam and don't know if I'll ever finish up my written trip report, but here's a compilation of some footage I took during the trip, it documents pretty much the whole experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LX3zhxPdlH4
