What You Need to Know After 12 years and three record attempts, Joe “Stringbean” McConaughy broke the supported record on the John Muir Trail—arguably the most competitive Fastest Known Time (FKT) in the world. He finished the 223-mile route through California’s Sierra Nevada in two days, 16 hours, and 15 seconds to shave nearly three and a half hours off of François D’Haene’s nine-year-old record. McConaughy attributes his 12 years of experience on the route along with a stellar crew willing to tackle complicated logistics and pace up to 40-mile sections to his success. He and one of his pacers, Caroline Himbert (who set her own FKT on the JMT this summer), spoke with author Emily Halnon for this story.

Friday July 3rd, I will attempt an unsupported out & back thru run on the Escarpment trail.

Congrats on the run and FKT!! I'm planning on running it this weekend, wondering if you have any tips/suggestions/advice? It's going to be hot, main question is how frequent decent water-refill options are along the route?

Also definitely read Dan Grips notes and I’d recommend running the section from Pratt Corner Rd (around mile 26) to Harris Mountain Rd once before attempting as there are a lot of turns that don’t have obvious marking.

Ran it today in 7:57, not quite what I hoped but a great route. My friend actually set the female self supported FKT finishing in 9:10. She started five minutes after me to avoid any complications with the verification.
